Today we are going to talk about simple ways to help you keep your eyes healthy.
1. Healthy eating
Many vision problems can be prevented with a well-balanced diet. It is possible to delay the appearance or significantly slow down the development of such age-related changes as macular degeneration and cataracts.
It is important not to allow a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, vitamins C and E in the diet.
To do this, eat more:
- green vegetables (spinach, cabbage, greens)
- fatty fish (salmon, halibut, tuna)
- eggs
- nuts
- beans
- citrus fruits.
2. Active lifestyle
Regular physical activity significantly reduces the risk of developing diseases (diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia) that can cause vision problems.
3. Quitting smoking
Smoking is significantly associated with a higher risk of cataracts, optic nerve degenerative changes, and macular degeneration.
Quitting tobacco use, even with years of smoking history, provides additional benefits in maintaining eye health.
4. Sunglasses
Wear sunglasses!
Exposure to unprotected eyes to ultraviolet radiation increases the likelihood of developing cataracts and macular degeneration.
Use glasses that block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
5. Safety glasses
Protect your eyes by using safety glasses whenever there is a risk of injury. For example, when performing construction, carpentry, or renovation work.
Some sports (hockey, swimming) also require eye protection using a helmet, face shield, or sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses.
6. Give your eyes a rest
During work, in which the gaze is fixed for a long time on the screen of a computer or other device, a sensation of dry eyes, headache, and problems with focusing vision may appear.
Take breaks by looking away from the screen every 20 minutes to look into the distance for 20-30 seconds or a minute.
7. Hygiene comes first
When using contact lenses, to prevent eye infections, hands should be washed before each handling of the lenses. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before putting on or removing contact lenses.
6. Regular visits to the ophthalmologist
Regular eye exams are essential for both adults and children. This allows early detection and treatment of eye diseases that can be asymptomatic for a long time, such as glaucoma.
